Module 1: Introduction to Avocado
While everyone is aware of the numerous health benefits avocado offers, we touch base on this topic quickly and move on to its economical advantage in the Indian economy and present a business case for Avocado farming in India. We then cover 2 important botanical topics that are directly linked to its profitability. Its ripening behaviour and the pollination puzzle.
Learning Outcomes: You are presented with a business case for avocado farming.
Module 2: The varieties of Avocado
You will learn about the different commercial varieties of avocado. The black skins, the green skins and the B-Types. You will also learn why betting on a single variety orchard might work against you and why you should plant multiple varieties.
You will also learn about the rootstocks and why commercial rootstocks are needed?
Learning outcomes: You will learn about the commercial avocado varieties and rootstocks.
Module 3: The soil check
You will learn the difference between a soil survey and a soil test and why you need to do both. You will also be taught how to read your soil test reports and what critical factors in your soil decide weather avocado could be farmed in a particular region or not.
Learning outcomes: You will learn how to do a soil survey and how to read soil tests.
Module 4: Water & Climate assessment
This section covers how to read your water test reports as well as how to judge if your climatic conditions allow avocado farming. We cover two important elements that might be present in your water that might be toxic to avocado, what specifically to look far in the water tests to determine the suitability of establishing an avocado orchard. We also touch on the topic of how water quality can affect your fertiliser choice.
The climatic conditions section outlines the ideal locations for avocado farming in India and how to farm avocados in relatively sub optimal conditions.
Learning outcomes: You will learn how read water tests and interpret climate data to identify if you can grow avocados or not.
Module 5: Final Planning & Economics
This module covers the logistics and the economics of avocado farming. We will begin with sourcing, spacing and planting methods. Then we discuss profitability. First we cover costs involved, break-even period, ROI and finally, yield projections. Lastly, we touch on the topic of Govt subsidies.
Learning Outcomes: You will be equipped with essential knowledge to create a realistic business plan for Avocado farming in India.
Module 6: Course Assignment & Conclusion
You are given a basic assignment to analyse if your area is suitable for Avocado farming. This assignment is designed to condense your learning so far, and come to a YES or NO decision regarding avocado farming. Its important that you do it once to internalize what you have learnt so far.
